What is gut dysbiosis and what does it have to do with IBS?

Have you been struggling with fatigue, brain fog, or bloating? These are a few signs of gut dysbiosis, which means that the balance of good bacteria (probiotics) is disrupted and the ‘bad’ bacteria are taking over. Dys = impaired biosis = mode of life. Many people are walking around with gut dysbiosis due to poor diets, antibiotic usage, stress, and toxins. This is expressed in symptoms related to immunity, physical and mental wellbeing.

According to a 2021 review published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, when the gut has a healthy balance of microbes it reduces the chance of developing many types of chronic conditions, including:

  • Mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, dementia and schizophrenia
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Asthma
  • kidney disease
  • arthritis

Some of these are more severe and developed over time, but more motivation to take care of your gut now- rather than later- right?

If you are experiencing any digestive symptoms, know that you are not alone. Did you know that 40% of the world has a functional gastrointestinal disease? And perhaps even more interesting is the fact that the term ‘functional gastrointestinal disease’ is now being recognized as a ‘disorder of the gut-brain interaction’? If you have any of the above symptoms or are noticing some digestive discomfort like bloating, excessive gas, diarrhea or constipation, then I would encourage you to heal your gut, balance your microbes and regain your vitality sooner rather than later!

How do I fix gut dysbiosis?

Yes, gut dysbiosis is linked to IBS, which is becoming increasingly common (18% of Canadians have it). So you may be wondering how do I fix this? Enough with the emergency bathroom trips, embarrassing farts, and painful bloating after meals and that fatigue that just never seems to go away. Don’t worry- there is a solution. But where do I start? You may be wondering. Luckily- I’ve got you covered.

A little about your coach Heather:

Heather is an adventurous, caring, biohacking plant-based health coach. As a neuroscience student, she suffered from a 5-month concussion recovery journey (the irony), mold toxicity (hello damp Vancouver), and then SIBO (common gut condition). She has successfully healed from all of these ailments, after many hours of research, visiting many skilled practitioners and self-experimentation with diet, supplements and stress-reduction techniques. She has a deep love and understanding of habit formation and the psycho-emotional aspects of building a secure and regulated nervous system, (thanks to somatic therapy, hypnotherapy and other modalities), which has served her well coaching mostly women on their wellness journeys over that last 3 years. She is usually found hiking a mountain, dancing on the beach, teaching meditation classes or doing another online course as a self-proclaimed lifelong-learner. Having spent many years in school, she now holds a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry and neuroscience, a masters in data science, and is a certified gut health practitioner.

She loves supporting clients as they heal and gain new health habits and shifts in awareness. She believes that all of your health and wellness dreams are available to you and waiting for you to say yes to yourself!
